Frequently Asked Questions

Will this install the dependencies I add?

No — this tool only generates the package.json file text. You still run `npm install` (or yarn/pnpm) afterward to actually install what's listed.

What's the difference between dependencies and devDependencies?

Dependencies are packages your project needs at runtime (in production). devDependencies are only needed during development — build tools, linters, test frameworks — and aren't installed when a package is installed as a dependency of something else.

What does "private: true" actually do?

It's a safeguard that makes npm refuse to publish the package if someone accidentally runs `npm publish` inside it. It's standard practice for any application (as opposed to a reusable library) that was never meant to be published to the npm registry.

Is this a substitute for running npm init?

It produces the same kind of file, but with a visual form instead of answering prompts in a terminal — useful if you want to see the whole structure at once, double-check formatting, or aren't at a terminal.
