Settle Up Without the Mental Math

Working out a tip and then dividing an odd total between a group at the table is the kind of quick math that's easy to fumble, especially with a menu in one hand and a phone in the other. This calculator handles the whole sequence at once — tip amount, grand total, and an even per-person split — plus an optional round-up so the final amount is easy to pay in cash.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter the bill amountThe total on the receipt, before or after tax depending on your local convention.
  2. 2Pick a tip percentageUse a quick preset (10%, 15%, 20%) or the slider for any other value.
  3. 3Set the number of peopleSplitting the total evenly between everyone at the table.
  4. 4Round up if you likeOptionally round the final total up to the nearest ₹10 for a cleaner amount to pay.

Typical Tipping Norms

  1. 1RestaurantsIn many countries 10–15% is typical for good service, though some places add a service charge automatically — check the bill before adding a tip on top of one that's already included.
  2. 2Cafes and quick-service countersTipping is often optional or a small rounded-up amount rather than a full percentage — norms here vary more by local custom than by any fixed rule.
  3. 3Delivery and ride-hailingA flat amount or a smaller percentage is common, since the transaction is usually smaller and faster than a sit-down meal.
  4. 4Large groupsSome venues automatically add a fixed gratuity for large groups — always check the bill for this before manually calculating and adding a separate tip.

The Tip Formula

Tip = Bill × Tip% / 100
Per Person = (Bill + Tip) / Number of People

Example: a ₹987 bill with a 15% tip → tip = ₹148.05, total = ₹1,135.05. With "round up total" on, it rounds to the nearest ₹10 above (₹1,140 here) by adding the difference onto the tip, not the bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the tip amount calculated?

Tip = bill amount × (tip percentage ÷ 100). If you're splitting between multiple people, the total (bill + tip) is then divided evenly by the number of people.

What's a normal tip percentage?

10–20% is common in many contexts for restaurant service, with 15% often used as a reasonable middle ground when unsure. Local norms vary significantly, so this is a rough guide rather than a fixed rule.

Does this calculator split the tip or the whole bill between people?

It splits the total — bill plus tip — evenly across the number of people you enter, which is what most groups actually want when settling up together.

What does the "round up" option do?

It rounds the final total up to the nearest ₹10, which is useful when paying in cash and wanting a clean number rather than one with odd change.

Can I use this for a currency other than rupees?

Yes — the math works the same regardless of currency. The interface uses ₹ symbols since this is built for Indian users, but you can mentally substitute any currency; only the round-up preset assumes a ₹10-style denomination.

Is this tip calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free, no sign-up required, and it works entirely in your browser.
