GST Maths for the New Rates

GST was simplified on 22 September 2025: most goods and services now fall under 5% or 18%, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods. This calculator uses those rates and still keeps 12% and 28% for older bills. It works both ways, adding GST to a price or taking it out of a total, and shows the split as it appears on an invoice: CGST and SGST for a buyer in your state, or IGST for a buyer in another state. For a bill with several items at different rates, it gives a tax summary for each rate, just like a GST invoice.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Pick one amount or a bill with several itemsUse "One amount" for a single price. Use "Bill with several items" when items carry different GST rates, such as a 5% food item and an 18% service on the same bill.
  2. 2Say whether GST is already includedAdd GST to a price before tax, or remove GST from a total that already includes it.
  3. 3Choose the GST rateTap 0%, 3%, 5%, 18% or 40%, or type any other rate. The old 12% and 28% rates are there for bills dated before 22 September 2025.
  4. 4Choose where the buyer isSame state means CGST and SGST (half each); another state means IGST at the full rate.
  5. 5Copy or note the breakdownYou get the taxable value, each tax line, an optional round-off to the nearest rupee and the total in words, ready to copy into an invoice or message.

  2. 218% (standard rate)Most other goods and services: professional and IT services, electronics, ACs, TVs, cement, and small cars and motorcycles up to 350 cc, which came down from 28%.
  3. 340% (special rate)A short list of luxury and "sin" goods: bigger cars, yachts, private aircraft, aerated and sugary drinks, and, from 1 February 2026, pan masala, cigarettes and most tobacco products (bidi is at 18%).

The GST Formula

Add GST: GST = Amount × Rate / 100
Remove GST: Base = Amount / (1 + Rate / 100)
Amount — the base price (Add GST) or the GST-inclusive total (Remove GST)
Rate — the GST rate for the item (5%, 18%, 40%, or 0% / 3% for some items)
CGST / SGST — for a sale within the state, the GST is split evenly: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2. For a sale to another state, IGST = the full GST

Example: a ₹10,000 item at 18% GST → GST = ₹1,800 (CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900), total payable = ₹11,800. Going the other way, a ₹11,800 GST-inclusive price at 18% works back to a ₹10,000 base with the same ₹1,800 GST.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the GST rates in India now?

Since 22 September 2025 there are two main rates, 5% and 18%, plus a special 40% rate for a few luxury and sin goods. 0% (nil) and 3% (gold and silver) still apply to their items. The old 12% and 28% slabs were removed for nearly everything; tobacco and pan masala stayed at 28% plus cess until 31 January 2026 and moved to 40% from 1 February 2026. These are the GST Council's decisions from its 56th meeting.

How do I add GST to a price?

GST = price × rate ÷ 100, and the total is the price plus that GST. For example, ₹10,000 at 18% gives ₹1,800 GST and a total of ₹11,800.

How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?

Price before GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). For ₹11,800 at 18%, that is 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, so the GST is ₹1,800. Subtracting 18% of ₹11,800 (₹2,124) would be wrong, because the rate was charged on the lower price.

When do I charge CGST + SGST and when IGST?

If the seller and the place of supply are in the same state, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST in a Union Territory). At 18%, that is 9% + 9%. If the buyer is in another state, the whole 18% is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way.

Which rate should I use for an old bill?

Use the rate that applied on the date of supply. For bills, credit notes or returns dated before 22 September 2025, the old 12% and 28% rates may apply; tap them under "Bills before 22 Sep 2025".

Can I calculate a bill with items at different GST rates?

Yes. Open "Bill with several items", add each item with its price, quantity and rate, and you get a tax summary for each rate (as shown on a GST invoice), the bill total, a round-off to the nearest rupee and the amount in words.

How is the round-off worked out?

The bill total is rounded to the nearest rupee, and the difference (up to 50 paise either way) is shown as a separate "Round off" line, the way most billing software does it. The tax amounts themselves are not changed.

Where can I check the exact GST rate for my product?

Rates depend on the HSN code (for goods) or SAC code (for services). Check the CBIC GST rate finder or your tax adviser for the exact rate. This calculator does the maths once you know the rate.

Is this GST calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser, so the amounts you enter are not sent anywhere.
