What Is EXIF Metadata?

Nearly every photo taken with a camera or phone carries hidden metadata alongside the visible image — camera make and model, exposure settings, the date and time it was taken, and sometimes the exact GPS location. What EXIF Data Can Actually Expose

What is EXIF metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is hidden data embedded in a photo by the camera or phone that took it — things like the camera model, date and time, exposure settings, and sometimes GPS location.

Why would I want to remove it?

Privacy is the main reason — GPS coordinates in a photo can reveal where you live or where a photo was taken. Some people also strip it simply to reduce file size or avoid sharing camera/device details.

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

No. For JPG, PNG and WebP the metadata blocks are cut out of the file and the picture data is copied unchanged, so every pixel is identical. Only HEIC, GIF and other formats are redrawn and saved as high-quality JPG or PNG. The colour profile and the rotation flag are kept, so colours stay right and photos don't turn sideways.

Do social media sites already remove this for me?

Most major platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X) strip EXIF data automatically when you upload a photo. It's direct sharing — email, messaging apps, personal websites, cloud drive links — where metadata often survives untouched, which is exactly where this tool is most useful.

Can I see the metadata without removing it?

Does WhatsApp remove location from photos?

When you send a photo normally in WhatsApp, it is compressed and the metadata is removed. Photos sent as a document, shared by email, uploaded to a website or shared through a cloud link usually keep their location, which is when cleaning them first matters.

What does "Remove location only" keep?

For JPG photos it keeps the camera make and model, settings and dates, and removes GPS location, names and copyright text, comments and the hidden preview thumbnail (which can show the uncropped original). For other formats everything is removed.
