The Most Common Reasons Photos Get Rejected

1Background isn't plain or light enoughA patterned wall, shadow behind the subject, or a colored background is one of the most common reasons a submitted photo gets rejected — a plain white or light gray wall is the safest choice.
2Face is too small, too large, or off-center in the frameMost document photo rules specify a percentage range for how much of the frame your face should fill — the green guide bands and the head-size check show you when you're inside that range.
3Glasses, shadows, or expression don't meet the ruleMany documents now require glasses off (or non-reflective lenses), no shadows across the face, and a neutral expression with both eyes open — none of which a cropping tool can fix, so it's worth checking your specific document's rules before you even take the photo.

Good to Know

Head size is the most common reason photos are rejected. The checker estimates your head height in millimetres and tells you to zoom in or out.
The background option turns a plain, light wall white. It can't fix a busy background, so stand in front of a plain wall.
UK photos need a cream or light grey background, so whitening is off for the UK by default.
Files are saved at 300 DPI with the print size stored in the file, so they print at the real size. Print at "actual size" or 100%, never "fit to page".
For online applications that set a file size limit, run the photo through Resize by KB afterwards.

Will this photo definitely be accepted for my application?

This tool gets you the correct pixel dimensions for common document types, but acceptance also depends on background color, lighting, expression, and other rules set by the specific issuing authority — always check the official requirements for your exact application.

What size is an Indian passport photo?

Passport Seva asks for a recent colour photo 4.5 cm high and 3.5 cm wide, with a plain white background, dark clothes, the full face visible and both ears showing. Dark glasses aren't allowed.

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, on a white or off-white background. Glasses aren't allowed.

How do I print passport photos at a shop?

Download the 4 × 6 in print sheet and ask for a normal 4 × 6 (10 × 15 cm) photo print at actual size. You get several copies to cut out along the grey lines, for the price of one print.

What DPI is the output?

300 DPI, the standard for printed photos, and the DPI is written into the JPG so it prints at the real size.

Can I use this for a document type not in the list?
