Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between STCG and LTCG?
For listed Indian equity, Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) applies when shares are held 12 months or less, taxed at a flat 20%. Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) applies beyond 12 months, taxed at 12.5%, with the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains in a financial year exempt from tax entirely (rates effective from Budget 2024, 23 July 2024 onward).
Is the tax estimate exact?
It's a reasonable estimate based on current published rates for listed equity, but it doesn't account for your full-year gains/losses across all trades, other exemptions, or STT already factored differently — your actual tax liability depends on your complete portfolio activity for the year. Treat it as a planning estimate, not a filing figure.
Why does the break-even price matter?
It's the exact sell price where you'd neither gain nor lose money once fees on both sides are accounted for — useful for deciding whether a trade is worth exiting versus holding, since the raw buy price alone understates what you actually need to recover.
What fees should I include?
Combine your brokerage, STT (Securities Transaction Tax), exchange charges, and GST into a single percentage for each side of the trade — most broker apps show this as a combined "charges" figure per trade, which is what you should enter here.
