Better Than a One-Click Grey

A plain grey conversion often looks flat. This converter lets you choose how each colour turns to grey, just like the coloured filters film photographers used, then add contrast, grain or a warm sepia tone. You can also keep a single colour for a striking colour-splash effect, or make a pure black-and-white image for printing and engraving.

Good to Know

  • Film photographers used coloured filters to control black and white: a red filter darkens blue skies and smooths skin, a green filter brightens leaves. The same filters are built in here.
  • Colour splash keeps one colour, like a red dress or a yellow taxi, and turns everything else grey. Tap “Pick colour from photo” and tap the colour you want to keep.
  • Pure B/W mode makes images with only black and white pixels. Dithering turns shades into fine dots, which is ideal for thermal printers, laser engraving and stencils.
  • Hold “Hold to compare” to see the original colours at any time.
  • Works the same in every browser, including Safari on iPhone and Mac.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which black and white style should I choose?

Start with Natural, which matches how bright colours look to the eye. Try Red or Orange for portraits and landscapes with sky, Green for nature, and Infrared for a dreamy look with glowing leaves.

How do I keep only one colour in a photo?

Choose Colour splash, tap “Pick colour from photo” and tap the colour you want to keep. Widen “Colour range” if parts of the object turn grey, or narrow it if other things keep their colour.

Does it reduce the quality of my photo?

No. Photos are converted at their full resolution and saved in their original format. JPG is saved at high quality (92%).

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server. It is free with no watermark.
