See the Change, Not Just the Result

Reading two versions of a document side by side and trying to spot what changed is slow and error-prone, especially in longer text. This tool computes the actual difference between the two — using the same longest-common-subsequence approach behind most version-control diffing — and shows added, removed, and unchanged lines clearly color-coded, with a summary count so you know the scope of the change before reading a single line.

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1Paste the original text on the leftThe starting version you're comparing against.
  2. 2Paste the changed text on the rightThe newer or edited version.
  3. 3Read the color-coded diff belowGreen lines were added, red lines were removed, and everything else stayed the same.
  4. 4Check the summary countsA quick total of exactly how many lines changed, without reading through everything.

Where This Comes In Handy

  1. 1Reviewing edits to an article or documentSeeing precisely which sentences changed between drafts is faster and more reliable than reading both versions side by side and trying to spot differences by eye.
  2. 2Comparing two versions of a config or data fileA one-line change in a long config file is easy to miss when scanning manually — a line-by-line diff surfaces it immediately.
  3. 3Checking what a collaborator actually changedWhen someone sends back an edited version of something you wrote, a diff shows exactly what they touched, rather than relying on them to describe it accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this tool decide what counts as "added" or "removed"?

It compares the two texts line by line using a longest-common-subsequence algorithm — the same general approach source control tools like Git use — to find the smallest possible set of additions and removals that explains the difference between the two versions.

Does it compare word by word, or only line by line?

Line by line. If a single word changes in the middle of a long line, that entire line is shown as one removed line and one added line, rather than highlighting just the changed word.

Is there a size limit on how much text I can compare?

For performance, comparisons are capped at 2,000 lines per side — well beyond typical documents, articles, or config files. Extremely long texts beyond that are truncated to the first 2,000 lines.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No — the entire comparison runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you paste into either box is sent anywhere.

Can I use this to compare code, not just prose?

Yes — the line-by-line comparison works the same regardless of content, so it works fine for comparing code snippets, configuration files, or any other line-structured text.

Is this text diff checker free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
