Uses the voices built into your device and browser — nothing is uploaded. Voices marked "online" are streamed by your browser's provider. Browsers don't allow saving this audio as a file.

Read Aloud, With the Word Highlighted

This tool uses your browser's own built-in speech engine to read any text aloud — no account, no server round-trip, and no audio ever leaves your device. Beyond basic playback, it highlights the current word as it's spoken (where your browser and chosen voice support it), so you can follow along visually while listening.

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1Paste or type your textAn article, an email, notes — anything you'd rather listen to than read.
  2. 2Pick a voiceChoose from the voices your device and browser already have installed.
  3. 3Adjust speed, pitch, and volumeSlow it down for dense text, or speed it up once you're used to a voice.
  4. 4Press PlayThe current word is highlighted as it's spoken, and you can pause or stop anytime.

Where This Comes In Handy

  1. 1Proofreading by earHearing your own writing read aloud is a well-known way to catch awkward phrasing, missing words, or run-on sentences that are easy to miss when just reading silently.
  2. 2MultitaskingListening to an article, a long email, or notes while doing something else — commuting, cooking, exercising — turns reading time into listening time.
  3. 3AccessibilityFor anyone who finds listening easier than reading on-screen text, this provides an immediate, no-install way to hear any text read aloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did other readers stop after a few sentences?

Chrome stops speaking one long block of text after about 15 seconds. This reader speaks your text sentence by sentence, so long articles keep going to the end — and Pause and Resume work on Android too, where the browser's own pause doesn't.

Can it read Hindi or other Indian languages?

Yes, if your device has a voice for that language. Choose the language first, then a voice — the list only shows voices your phone or computer actually has. Android and Windows usually include Hindi; more languages can be added in your system's speech settings.

Can I download the speech as an audio file?

No — this tool uses your browser's built-in text-to-speech engine to generate audio live as it plays, rather than producing an audio file. There's no reliable, standard way for a webpage to capture that live browser audio into a downloadable file, so this tool is built honestly for playback only.

Why do the available voices look different on my phone vs my computer?

Voices come from your operating system and browser, not from this website — so the list you see depends entirely on what's installed on your specific device. A different device or browser will offer a different set of voices.

Is my text uploaded anywhere to generate the speech?

No — the Web Speech API used here runs entirely on your device. Your text is sent directly to your operating system's speech engine, not to any server.

Why doesn't the word highlighting work for every voice?

Word-by-word highlighting relies on your browser and the selected voice reporting word boundaries as it speaks, which isn't supported equally by every voice or every browser. When it's not available, playback still works fine — you just won't see the live highlight.

Can I adjust how fast the text is read?

Yes — the speed slider goes from 0.5x (half speed) to 2x (double speed), useful for slowing down dense or technical text, or speeding through familiar content.

Is this text-to-speech tool free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up and no limit on how much text you read aloud.
