Numbering Done Properly

A page-number stamp needs more flexibility than just "top or bottom" — position, exact format, a custom start number for multi-part documents, and often a repeating header or footer alongside it. This tool covers all of that in one pass, with a live preview of the exact text before you generate anything.

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1Upload a PDFThe page count is detected automatically.
  2. 2Choose a position and format6 positions, and formats like "Page 1 of 10" or a plain number.
  3. 3Set a start numberUseful if this document continues numbering from another file.
  4. 4Add an optional header or footerA company name or document title repeated on every page.

Good to Know

  • The live preview shows exactly how your chosen format resolves before you generate the file.
  • Header and footer text is centered on every page, separate from the page-number position you choose.
  • A custom start number is useful for a document that's actually part 2 of a longer, already-numbered series.
  • Everything is applied client-side using pdf-lib — your document is never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a header and page numbers at the same time?

Yes — header text, footer text, and page numbers are independent and can all be used together.

What if I want page numbers to start from something other than 1?

Set the "Start Number" field to whatever number the first page should show — every following page counts up from there.

Will this work on a PDF that already has page numbers?

Yes, but the new numbers will be added on top of any existing ones — if the original already has numbering baked into the page content, you may end up with two sets.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No — everything is processed locally using pdf-lib in your browser.
